In Memory of...

Spirit

Hi Leah,

It is with a sad heart that I am writing to tell you that Spirit passed away peacefully in the beautiful autumn sunshine today Oct 22 2010 on the deck overlooking the lake at our house in Gaetz Brook. Spirit of Pal, as we liked to call him, came to us from your house…how long ago was it?...18 months or so...after you had saved him from his captivity at the SPCA. The story you told us then was that Spirit was the companion of a homeless man in Halifax for years, and that one day his master disappeared and Spirit wandered the streets on his own. He was picked up and taken to the shelter and had to be drugged to calm his anxiety at being caged. This went on for 6 months until you rescued him and put his picture up on the Rescue site. We had recently lost Pal (his memorial is on your site) and Barb showed me his picture and I said why not, he’ll be happy here. So we adopted him from you and brought him home. And he was very happy indeed. He gained about 20 pounds !! and took on the strong big chested form I’m sure he was meant to have. He had pretty severe arthritis in his back hips and we had him on chronic Medicam, increasing the dose over time to give him comfort and some freedom of movement. He would take his daily walk by himself through our big yard (and the neighbour’s), kept a hardy appetite and had lots and lots of happy nappy time. While he never really connected with Barb, he was very devoted to me and was always excited to see me come home. In the last weeks his movement worsened, he lost controls and I decided to let him take his big sleep in our yard under the red maple leaves. I will miss him. Keep up the great work for these loving dogs.
